Old KPIs vs New Work

You cannot reward the old work and expect the new work.

The Signal

Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index finds that 65% of AI users fear falling behind if they do not adapt quickly, while 45% say it feels safer to focus on current goals than redesign work with AI. Only 13% say they are rewarded for AI-driven reinvention even when results are not met. Microsoft calls this the Transformation Paradox.

Why It Matters for HR

AI transformation is therefore not just a training challenge. It is a performance, incentive, management, and culture challenge. If old KPIs continue to reward old workflows, employees have little reason to take the risk of redesigning work. HR needs to make new work visible in goals, evaluation, and rewards.

HR AI Forward View

HRAI Forward believes organizations cannot ask people to reinvent work while rewarding only the old work. Work redesign and performance system redesign must move together.

Think About Your Organization
